CAREDS - Eating Disorders Team CHO4

What is CAREDS Cork Kerry

CAREDS is the Child and Adolescent Regional Eating Disorder Service for Cork and Kerry. We provide specialist eating disorder care for young people under the age of 18 years who have an eating disorder. CAREDS is an outpatient service based in Cork. Young people must be physically well enough to be outside of hospital care in order to attend our service.

We are part of the HSE National Clinical programme for Eating Disorders (NCPED) and CAMHS in Cork and Kerry and we work closely with mental health, medical teams, liaison psychiatry and general practitioners to provide specialist eating disorder care across the region. When young people have additional mental health needs, we operate a shared model of care with their local CAMHS service.

The most common types of eating disorders we treat are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. We also support people with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Binge Eating Disorder when specialist input is required.

Our clinical model of care is a bio-psycho-social model. We are recovery and early intervention focused and our care planning is individualised and person centred. Our multidisciplinary team provides eating disorder treatments including psychiatric and dietetic consultation, therapies such as FBT, FT-AN, CBT-ED, AFT, group therapy, meal support skills, occupational therapy and psychological support.

Mission Statement

We work in partnership with young people with eating disorders and their families. We help them achieve meaningful recovery and best outcomes.

We do this through collaborative teamwork and the provision of specialised, accessible evidence based care.

We are committed to on-going learning, quality improvement and raising awareness about eating disorders.

How to refer

CAREDS accepts referrals from CAMHS, medical consultants and General Practitioners.

It is essential to be registered with a GP because the medical complications of eating disorders require physical monitoring in addition to mental health care.
