More than 400 people attended the World Kidney Awareness Day organised by Sligo General Hospital at the Tesco Arcade yesterday (Thursday 11th March). The theme of this year’s event was ““Protect your kidneys, control diabetes”.

Reports in the media today said that ‘The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) is investigating 19 allegations made against foster carers in Dublin North West and North Central.’ It is in fact the HSE that investigates complaints/allegations from children in foster care.

Kidney disease is a global pandemic! It is estimated that more than 500 million people worldwide have some form of kidney damage and every year millions of people die prematurely of diseases linked to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). In Ireland, it is estimated that some degree of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) afflicts up to 280,000 adults, most of whom are unaware of that fact. Celebrity Chef Richard Corrigan, of RTE television’s ‘City Farm’, was in Donegal recently as part of the County Enterprise Board’s ‘Enterprise Week’.
During his visit to the Letterkenny Community Gardens at St. Conal’s Hospital, Letterkenny, Richard spoke of the value of involving communities in growing healthy food. He also talked about the importance of growing native, indigenous varieties.
