The Nursing Home Resident Safety Improvement Scheme provides funding to improve infection prevention and fire safety in private and voluntary nursing homes. This funding enables private and voluntary nursing homes to be compliant with HIQA regulations.

How the scheme works
The scheme is a vouched scheme and is open to operational voluntary and private nursing homes
- registered with HIQA and the National Treatment Purchase Fund as of January 1st 2024, and
- receiving payment under the National Nursing Homes Support Scheme.
The Department of Health is responsible for policy matters in relation to the scheme and will provide oversight of the scheme.
The Department of Health will report to the Minister of State with special responsibility for Mental Health and Older People on the operation and progress of the scheme.
The HSE administers the scheme and makes payments to the Nursing Homes.
The National Treatment Purchase Fund administers the application process and provides support and advice to the HSE.
Claims must be made for each nursing home facility on an individual basis. Nursing homes that have previously carried out structural works can claim the cost of this work if it was carried out from January 1st 2020 to January 1st 2024.
Nursing homes can make multiple claims. Claims should be submitted in no more than two applications where possible, for example one claim for the period 2020 to 2023 and one claim for the period January 1st 2024 to November 15th 2024.
Payments will be processed and released on a quarterly basis by the HSE. Total funding for this scheme is €10 million. The maximum amount that can be claimed by a nursing home under this scheme is €25,000.
