The School Dental Inspection Scheme - Services for Children

Children up to 16 years of age can access emergency dental care.

Children in sixth class are prioritised for examination and treatment.

All children in special classes are targeted annually for examination and treatment. Adults and
children with special needs are recalled annually for dental review.

Dental Services are provided for Adults with Special Needs.

NB Please inform the dentist of any medical problems your child may have, or medicine they may be taking, at the first opportunity.

Seeing patients outside the scheme

Children outside of sixth class will be seen if they are in pain or have dental infection or if a parent or guardian, doctor or Public Health Nurse is worried about anything regarding their oral/dental health.

Please contact your local clinic for an appointment.

Services for pre-school children

The dental service does not provide a routine dental service for pre-school children, except emergency dental care.

Orthodontic treatment

The dental department is separate from the orthodontic department.

The dental department reviews children in sixth class to assess their orthodontic development. Referral to the orthodontic services is made if appropriate.
