Patients benefit as Errigal Hub celebrates first anniversary

 Errigal Hub celebrates first anniversary

“The ease of accessing the x-ray unit at Errigal Hub is really beneficial for the patient’s experience,” according to Siobhan McGrory, HSE Radiology Services Manager, Primary Care Services, Donegal.  Siobhan was reflecting as they celebrated one year since the community x-ray facility at the Letterkenny based Errigal Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Hub became operational.

“The radiology provides an x-ray service which is accessed via electronic request from the patient’s GP. This then means that the patient can avail of x-ray imaging in a convenient location, without the need to attend at the hospital.” Siobhan McGory

Located opposite the entrance to the Emergency Department at Letterkenny University Hospital, Siobhan continues: “Errigal CDM Hub x-ray service is one of five similar community services across Donegal that include Dungloe Community Hospital, Carndonagh Community Hospital, Donegal Town Community Hospital and Killybegs Community Hospital. The radiology service is set to expand further in the community in the future in order to meet the needs of the population of Donegal.”

Since the commencement of the service in January last year, over 5,586 patients have been x-rayed with over 6,604 x-rays performed. The facility operates Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm with a current capacity of 25 to 30 pre-scheduled x-rays per day.  There are two full time senior radiographers in place to support the facility.

Timely access to diagnostics

According to Maura Gillen, General Manager, HSE Primary Care Services, Donegal, “this facility ensures the rollout of the Enhanced Community Care Programme within Donegal. It has greatly enhanced our ability to provide our patients with the highest quality of care. Through this investment, we are committed to the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve. The service is an integral part of the Sláintecare plan for diagnostics in Donegal: the right care at the right place and at the right time. It has benefitted patients as it improves timely access to diagnostics in the community.  Significantly, it also removes the need for the patient to attend Letterkenny University Hospital which results in less pressure on the acute services in the hospital.”
