Training Lead Role

There are numerous clinical sites within the state designated as training sites for the purpose of providing Intern and Specialist Training. Evaluation of clinical sites for undergraduate and intern training purposes is conducted by the Medical Council of Ireland. The inspection of specialist training sites is currently conducted by Irish training bodies (or in the case of Surgery by the SAC in the UK), who conduct this role as a function of their role as postgraduate training bodies accredited by the Medical Council; the Medical Council also has a statutory role for the inspection of sites for specialist training. The Medical Council have developed and published the ‘Medical council criteria for the evaluation of training sites which support the delivery of specialist training’. 

National Doctors Training & Planning (NDTP) assessed that there was a requirement to establish an HSE appointed training lead or leads (as deemed appropriate by NDTP) in each hospital group. The Training Lead Initiative was established on a pilot basis in 2017 with training leads appointed in University of Limerick Hospitals Group and Saolta Hospitals Group and has since been rolled out in the Dublin Midlands Hospitals Group and South / South West Hospitals Group. The Training Lead(s) has overall responsibility for all hospitals within that group, and is responsible for ensuring that the criteria as laid out in the Medical Council document is met. The role does not replace or substitute the current training roles within sites. The training lead co-ordinates and acts as a central point of contact for all generic training related issues, particularly from an educational governance perspective and relating to external stakeholders, supporting the delivery of training as appropriate to each Clinical Site.
