Leadership and Management Scholarship
In 2017 NDTP launched a new Scholarship to part fund 24 NCHDs pursuing a Masters Degree in Management and Leadership Skills.
Doctors are an invaluable resource within our health service. Clinician Leadership is recognised as essential in both the delivery of healthcare and the management of the health service. The relationship between medical engagement and leadership and organisational performance including delivery of quality patient care is unmistakeable.
The HSE is interested in receiving applications from a broad spectrum of specialities. The funding will support 24 doctors to pursue a Masters – 12 places will be part-funded in the first year and a further 12 in the second year.
Funding will be available for up to 60% of the cost of an approved Masters Course in the Republic of Ireland reimbursed up to a maximum of €4,800 per year.
The aim of the funding is to:
- provide an additional option to NCHDs regarding their area of interest
- encourage doctors with an interest in management and leadership roles to undertake a formal qualification
- prepare doctors for management and leadership roles e.g. Clinical Directors
- enhance the key role clinicians play in management and equip NCHDs with the necessary skills to undertake these roles in the future
It is expected that the Masters programme will be 2 years part time, however consideration will be given to applicants who are availing of out of clinical programme experience recognised by their training body and wish to complete a 1 year full time programme.
This scholarship is an investment both in the professional development of non-consultant hospital doctors and in the future of the Irish public health service.
Applications for 2024 will open on Monday, 12th of February 2024 and will close on Monday, 25th March 2024.

Overseas Training - Dr Richard Steevens' Scholarship 
The Dr Richard Steevens' Scholarship is awarded annually to Specialist/Senior Registrars with strong records of accomplishment and excellence.
The Scholarship supports doctors to train in centres of excellence overseas in novel areas of medicine and patient care, which are limited or unavailable in Ireland, and to bring the skills gained back to the Irish health service.
Since the Scholarship was developed and established in 2007, 61 doctors have been awarded Scholarships and a further 24 have been awarded bursaries under the programme. A number of past recipients have since been appointed to consultant posts in Ireland.
After due consideration four Scholarships for 2024 were awarded to the following candidates:
- Dr Brendan Kelly, SpR in Radiology, will undertake a fellowship in the Clinical Application of Artificial Intelligence to Paediatric Radiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, UK.
- Dr Stefanie Croghan, SpR in Urology, will undertake a fellowship in fellowship in Endourology, including the complex management of kidney stones and Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, UK.
- Dr Ian Reynolds, SpR in General & Colorectal Surgery, will commence as the International Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellow in The Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA.
- Dr Catherine Weadick, SpR in Oncology, will undertake a fellowship in Adolescent Young Adult Oncology & Sarcoma in Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada.
In addition to the prestigious and highly competitive Dr Richard Steevens’ Scholarships the NDTP HSE has also awarded two bursaries to:
- Dr Catherine King, SpR in Immunology, will commence her fellowship in the assessment, workup, treatment and post-procedure care for adults with inborn errors of immunity (IEI) undergoing haematopoetic stem cell transplant, and management of transitional care (paediatric to adult) in patients with complex IEI at the University College London, UK.
- Dr Elaine Quinlan, SpR in Radiation Oncology, will commence a Proton Beam Therapy Fellowship at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, UK
A broad range of specialities is represented in this year’s intake to the Dr Richard Steevens’ Scholarship and Bursary programme. The NTDP wishes all the participants every success in the coming year and looks forward to their valuable contribution to the care of HSE patients in the coming years.
