 About the Public Health Strategy

The Office of the National Director of Public Health is excited to announce the development of a Public Health Strategy for the HSE.

The strategy, which is the first HSE Public Health strategy, has been a recommendation of several key Public Health reports in recent years, including the Crowe Horwath Report on the Role, Training and Career Structures of Public Health Physicians in Ireland, the Report of the Public Health Reform Expert Advisory Group, and the World Health Organisation Report on the Essential public health functions in Ireland.

This initiative aims to provide a clear roadmap for Public Health over the next five years and is timely, given the reform processes which have been implemented both within Public Health, and across the wider HSE as part of Sláintecare.

Dr. John Cuddihy, HSE National Director for Public Health, who proposed the project noted that “As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, it is essential that we have a Public Health strategy for the HSE that links all domains of public health, nationally and regionally, around a common vision and purpose”.

The development of this strategy is a collaborative effort that will gather input from a wide range of stakeholders through workshops, surveys and an online consultation process. The process is also supported by a multidisciplinary steering group with community representatives, chaired by Dr. Cuddihy, and an expert advisory group, chaired by Professor Patricia Fitzpatrick, Full Professor of Epidemiology & Biomedical Statistics at University College Dublin.
