About the National Health Intelligence Unit
The National Health Intelligence Unit (NHIU) is situated in the HSE Centre, and is now integral to the Population and Public Health Directorate. The core purpose of Health Intelligence is to exploit the untapped potential of available data to improve health outcomes for individuals and populations. This is achieved through:
- the provision of thought leadership in health intelligence for the HSE
- identification of critical needs
- the delivery of clear, evidence-based insights to empower decision-makers in tackling real-world challenges to make a difference to health services and the public’s health
The national health intelligence function is undergoing significant evolution, driven by several key Irish strategic initiatives. These include:
- the Crowe Horwath report
- HSE Centre reforms
- Sláintecare
- Healthy Ireland
- Harnessing Digital – The Digital Ireland Framework
- Connecting Government 2030: A Digital and ICT Strategy for Ireland’s Public Service the National eHealth Strategy
- Digital for Care: A Digital Health Framework for Ireland 2024-2030
Additionally, the anticipated Health Information Bill is expected to be a key enabler in this space. Furthermore, recent advancements at the European level (EU Data Act, EU Data Governance Act, and European Health Data Space) are fostering a supportive environment for progress in healthcare informatics.
To deliver its function, the NHIU fosters collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders including:
- internal HSE (Centre and Regions) partners,
- Public Health (hub and spoke), and
- external agencies such as the Department of Health, Health Research Board, Central Statistics Office, HIQA, and academia.
