Annual report 2023 (PDF) launched on 15th February 2024, International Childhood Cancer Day 2024.
The HSE National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) is delighted to launch the third children, adolescent and young adult (CAYA) cancer programme Annual Report 2023.
The report highlights achievements in CAYA cancer care during 2023.

- In 2023 there was investment in the three AYA cancer units at
- James’s Hospital
- Cork University Hospital
- Galway University Hospital
- The appointment of CAYA staff supports the National Cancer Strategy 2017-2026
- Shows commitment to providing comprehensive care for CAYA cancer patients
- Highlights collaboration of multidisciplinary teams, cancer charities, patients and their families.
Speaking in relation to annual report, Professor Owen Smith, National Clinical Lead for Children, Adolescent and Young Adult Cancers at National Cancer Control Programme, HSE said:
- Our focus in 2023 was providing safe, high quality care and treatment for CAYA cancer patients.
- Significant progress has been made in implementing the Framework for the Care and Support of Adolescent and Young Adults (AYA) in Ireland (2021- 2026).
- A new national Multi-disciplinary Meeting (MDM) has been set up
- At the MDM, healthcare professionals discuss and address the challenges faced by AYA cancer patients
- Supports are offered according to patient need
- This includes referrals to AYA health professionals, community support services, and linking with HSE supports
- Recruitment of CAYA staff
