All Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) with cancer in Ireland should be discussed at the National AYA Multi-Disciplinary Meeting (MDM), in addition to discussion at their local tumour MDM.
MDM discussion can facilitate the following, as appropriate:
- Treatment considerations
- Psycho-social discussion
- Case registration with AYA Cancer Service for data collection
The purpose of this MDM is to ensure that all AYA cancer patients have equitable access to the following:
- Comprehensive personalised age care
- A holistic health needs assessment to help guide their management.
- Developmentally appropriate care
- Planning/confirmation of evidence-based management of each patient in collaboration with the treating hospital.
- Psychological oncology services
- Fertility preservation
- Education and career development support
- Palliative care
The MDM is also an important forum for the continuing education of medical staff and health professionals, and for collecting data to aid audit and service development.
The National AYA Cancer MDM is held weekly on alternating Tuesdays/Wednesdays at 1-2pm. You can attend virtually via Teams, or in-person at CHI Crumlin (Tuesdays only).
Referral Process
Referrals are welcomed from any location across the country.
Any health professional who is treating an AYA with cancer can make a referral, or request to attend the MDM.
To refer:
The AYA MDM co-ordinator will get in touch to confirm the date of MDM discussion for your patient and provide a link for meeting attendance.
We ask that you attend the meeting to present the patient that you are referring (you can attend the meeting virtually).
- If this is not possible, please nominate an appropriate team member to present on your behalf.
To facilitate a comprehensive and collaborative discussion, we invite you to circulate confirmed meeting details to all healthcare professionals involved in the young person’s care, including allied health professionals and the patient’s general practitioner (GP).
