Developmental exams
Public Health Nurses carry out Developmental Examinations of babies at various stages. These are to check if the baby is growing properly and is able to do all that a baby of the particular age should.
They are done at :
- Birth
- 3 Months
- 7 Months
- 9-12 Months* (Doctors' Developmental)
- 2 Years
- 3 Years - Child is discharged unless there is some concern.
*Doctors' Developmental exam is done between 9-12 months.
An appointment will be sent by post. If you have not received an appointment by 12 months contact 01 236 5200 (Dublin South Catchment area only)
At these checks the nurse
- Measures the baby's growth
- Assesses his/her development
- Checks his/her eyes for the presence of a squint
- Gross motor skills and fine motor skills are assessed and if there are any worries or concerns the baby is referred to our Doctor
- Speech and Language development is also considered at these checks
It is very important that parents bring their children to these Developmental Checks as the nurse or doctor can detect any health or developmental problems the baby or young child may have. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment improve the outcome of most conditions.

CSAP (Child Safety Awareness Programme)
The aim of the Child Safety Awareness Programme (CSAP) is to reduce and prevent 'unintentional injury' to children within the home. It does this by empowering and supporting parents and carers to make the necessary changes to promote child safety. Communication, education, participation and empowerment are key elements to the delivery of the programme and its key message is - watch your child at all times, as children do not understand danger. All aspects - from training to resource development - are managed in the Midlands by the CSAP Project Leader.
Delivery:
The CSAP is delivered by Public Health Nurses at their child health surveillance visits. The programme targets parents and carers of children in the 0 - 5 year age group and is divided into three specific age and developmental stages: 0-11 months, 12-23 months and 2-5 years.
