Education of Health Professionals
The education of Health Care Professionals (HCPs) who deliver diabetes care is instrumental to patient experiences and outcomes. It also impacts on HCPs’ empowerment, efficiency, effectiveness and job satisfaction. As such, education is seen a vial part of ECAD.
On joining ECAD all GPs and Practice Nurses (PNs) undertook the ICGP-approved modular diabetes distance learning course. This was supported by 3 education sessions, 2 of which were compulsory. When ECAD expanded in 2009, GPs and some PNs undertook the aforementioned course. Other PNs undertook the Higher Education Awards Council (HETAC) Level 8 Certificate in Diabetes Nursing at Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown.
Ongoing education has been delivered over the years mainly by SCH and SVUH staff and members of the ECAD Team. The content has generally been directed by ECAD GP and PN members and has been delivered over 3 sessions per year. However, to support the Diabetes Cycle of Care (CoC), a more structured education programme has been developed in 2017 i.e. Foundation Series of Modules in Diabetes Care in the Primary Care Setting (docx). This is delivered over 3 x 2.5 hour sessions at 2 monthly intervals. Two courses were delivered in 2017.
