Antimicrobial resistance in Shigella species is a growing concern internationally.Shigellosis in adult males acquired in Ireland appears very strongly associated with gay or bisexual men who have sex with men (gbMSM). It is important to establish if adult males presenting with shigellosis are gbMSM and advise them to avail of screening for other STIs.
