Roscommon Mental Health Services provide inpatient and community Service, to a population of 65,000. The Community Mental Health Teams are multidisciplinary, led by Consultant Psychiatrists. The community mental health team comprises of Nursing, i.e. Clinical Nurse Specialists, Community Mental Health Nurses, Clinical Nurse Manager 2’s and Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Social Workers, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Addiction Counsellors, Dietician, Peer Support workers, and administrative support.
There is also a Team coordinator in place across the two Adult Mental Health Teams and the Psychiatry of Later Life Service, (POLL) in GR6, which is the one point of contact for the referrals being referred in to the service. There is also a nurse led Intensive Home Based Treatment Team that provides a seven day service to the adult population of Roscommon Mental Health Services.
There are three Day Centres across the county and a Day Hospital based in Roscommon Primary Care Building. There are recovery support workers at HCA (health care assistant) grade, which provide outreach service to service users in their own home, implementing the care plan devised by the key worker in collaboration with the MDT (multidisciplinary team).
The Community Mental Health Teams provide a number of therapeutic groups and programmes, to service users, across the county, i.e. DBT skills-based groups, CBT anxiety-based groups, and CBT in depression groups, WRAP, health promotion, to mention a few.
The Approved Centre in Roscommon is a 24 bedded unit, which serves the county of Roscommon, GR6, including all three specialism’s, i.e. Adult Mental Health, Rehab and Recovery, and Psychiatry of Later Life (POLL). The Approved Centre also accepts admissions from the GR5 Adult Mental Health service; catchment area for the East Galway area which is as follow (Athlone, Ballinasloe, Portumna area) and GR6 (Roscommon area).
The Psychiatry of Later Life team, in GR6, covers a population of 100,000 for the over 65yrs age cohort. Following a diagnosis with a mental disorder, or dementia the Psychiatry of Later Life team provides a community-based service, with home visits, outpatient clients in the community and nursing homes. The team’s composition is as follows and is led by a POLL Consultant, NCHD, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist and Admin support.
The Rehabilitation and Recovery team is a community-based team covering GR5 and GR6 areas. The service consists of medium support hostels. In GR6, the hostel in Castlerea is called Tighe na Garad and Farnview hostel in Strokestown. The team consists of Consultant Psychiatrist, NCHD, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, CNS, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist and Admin support. It enables service users to access training, education and job opportunities. There is also a Housing Coordinator appointed to the Galway Roscommon area and they have a key role in liaising with the county councils and approved housing body in an effort to secure tenancies for our service users. Referral to the Rehab & Recovery team is from the General Adult teams in the GR5 and GR6 catchment area.
There is a Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS) community-based service in the town of Roscommon, serving the county of Roscommon and East Galway. The CAMHS team accept referrals for children and adolescents up to the age of 18 with a suspected moderate to severe mental health disorder. CAMHS teams are multi-disciplinary in nature, led by a Consultant Psychiatrist. This means that they are made up of a range of disciplines with different skills and perspectives including Medical, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Psychology and Social Work, so that children and adolescents can be offered a care and treatment package that addresses their individual clinical needs.
There is also a CAMHS Day Hospital/ Assertive Outreach Team operating from the eHub in Castlerea, Roscommon with a multidisciplinary team providing care to Children and Adolescents who require more intensive input as an alternative to Inpatient admission.
Roscommon Training Centres (Roscommon town, Boyle and Castlerea)
Training Centres promote positive Mental Health and Wellbeing for individuals on their recovery journey. This is done through activities such as Horticulture, Crafts, Budgeting and Cooking for Independent Living, Rhythm to Recovery (Drumming), Development of Social Skills, IT skills for everyday living, meeting other people and building a network of friends, getting involved in community activities and Volunteering.
Programmes are tailor-made to suit the individual’s needs and build on their strengths as part of their recovery journey.
Referral to the Mental Health Service
The service provides access to mental health services for adult people experiencing mental health issues from the age of 18 to 65yrs. People can gain access to the service following referral by their GP where their referral is triaged and an appointment is offered. In an emergency, people can present to the Acute Unit with a referral from their GP and assessment will be carried out. Outpatient clinics are held in a number of areas each week: Roscommon Town, Boyle, Strokestown, Castlerea and Ballaghaderreen, for all three specialisms.
The overall responsibility for the management of Roscommon Mental Health Service is the remit of the Area Management Team (AMT). The management group meet monthly and consists of:

Approved Centre
An Approved Centre is a service registered by the Mental Health Commission to provide inpatient treatment for people suffering from mental illness.
The Acute Unit in Roscommon Hospital is an Approved Centre for the Roscommon catchment area, East Galway (GR6), along with the catchment areas of Athlone, Ballinalsoe and Portumna (GR5 catchment area)
Regari Recovery College
Regari Recovery College is based in Roscommon town and uses adult education in the service of recovery by running co-produced and co-delivered modules across Roscommon and East Galway. The aim is to support, maintain, and promote positive mental health in the community. The purpose of the Regari Recovery College is to create a culture of recovery, to improve quality of life and promote social inclusion by empowering people with mental health challenges, their families, friends and the community through co-produced education and learning together.
