What is palliative care?

Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of people facing the problems associated with life-limiting illness and supports their families. It focuses on the prevention and relief of suffering by assessing and treating pain and other physical, psychosocial, or spiritual problems.

How you can access the service

The specialist palliative care service is accessible to people with current or anticipated complexities relating to symptom control, end of life care planning or other physical, psychosocial or spiritual needs that cannot be reasonably managed by the current care providers . Referral to the service is made by the palliative care department in the acute hospitals or by GPs.

For symptom control admissions, the person is discharged home when feeling improved and their symptoms can be managed under the care of the community CNS comfortably in their place of residence. The hospice is not suitable for people requiring long term residential care.

Where can I or my family access specialist palliative care in Kildare or West Wicklow?

Specialist palliative care can be accessed at home through the community palliative care team, in St. Brigid’s Hospice, and in Naas General Hospital.
