Children's Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapists provide assessment, diagnosis and therapy for children with a wide range of communication difficulties.

Our service

We see children from 0 to 18 years who have difficulties with communication.

We see children who live in the Dublin South City catchment area, which includes the South Inner City, and parts of Rialto, Kilmainham, Dolphin’s Barn, Ringsend, Harold’s Cross, Kimmage, Templeogue, Terenure, Limekiln, Rathmines, Rathgar, Ranelagh, Sandymount, Rathfarnham, Ballyboden, and Knocklyon. 

We see children with:

  • language delay or disorder
  • Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)
  • difficulty understanding language
  • difficulty using language
  • speech sound difficulties
  • stammering or stuttering
  • speech and language difficulties from a hearing impairment
  • cleft palate
  • voice disorders

Referrals to specialised team services are recommended for:

  • children with significant needs in more than one area (for example, communication, behaviour, emotions, motor skills, or sensory processing)
  • children with complex needs requiring a team input. (for example, Autism Spectrum Disorder, physical disabilities)

We have an open referral policy. Parents and guardians can make a referral by completing the referral form.

Teachers or other health care professionals (for example, the GP or Public Health Nurse) can also make a referral when there is consent from parents or guardians.

We have centres which cover the Dublin South City catchment area. Your child will attend a centre based off your address.

If you are not sure if you should refer your child, we are running an online drop-in advice clinic once a month. Email slt.dublinsouthcity@hse.ie to ask about the dates that these are on.

Advice Clinic

We provide a drop in session for parents/ carers of children to discuss any concerns regarding your child’s speech and language development. It is a parent only appointment to talk about your child’s skills and get advice. The clinic runs online on the last Thursday of the month from 9.30-11.00am. The online clinic can be accessed by clicking the link below:
