National Inpatient Experience Survey

The National Inpatient Experience Survey gets underway on May 1 2024.

All patients aged 16 years and over, discharged during the month of May, who spend 24 hours or more in a public acute hospital and have a postal address in the Republic of Ireland will be asked to complete the survey. Eligible patients will receive an invitation and two reminders in the post between June and July to take part in the survey. Patients can take part online or complete the hard copy survey that they will receive in the post.

It is the largest survey of its kind in Ireland and offers patients the opportunity to share their experiences of hospital care and tell us what improvements they believe are necessary.

The survey is part of the National Care Experience Programme, a joint initiative between the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA), the Department of Health and the Health Service Executive (HSE).

Patients will have the opportunity to tell us about every aspect of their care, such as confidence and trust in hospital staff, care and treatment on the ward and the provision of information and support when leaving hospital.

Responses to the survey will be used to improve hospital care in Ireland.
