“We recognise that Self-Advocacy is fundamental to ensuring that the voices of people with disabilities are central to the planning and development of our services,” according to Edel Quinn, Head of Disability Services, speaking in recent days as HSE Disability Services for Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo, in partnership with Inclusion Ireland, hosted a “Hear My Voice” Self-Advocacy event in Ballybofey, Co Donegal.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including Self Advocates, individuals accessing disability services, key workers, disability services staff, representatives from other support services, and senior management. It showcased inspiring presentations from Self Advocates and their support staff, emphasising the vital role of Self-Advocacy in promoting autonomy, respect, and mutual support. These presentations illustrated innovative approaches and demonstrated how thinking creatively can pave the way forward, even in uncertain situations.

Self-Advocacy empowers individuals to understand their rights, express their needs, take action, and take control of their lives. It is about confidently communicating and advocating for one’s interests. The event also highlighted the key outcomes of the three-year Self-Advocacy Strategy and its implementation plan, launched in 2023. This strategy outlines a robust model for fostering a culture of participation, enabling adults with disabilities to engage in meaningful decision-making within Disability Services.

Now in its third consecutive year, the event continues to highlight the challenges faced by people with disabilities while showcasing the transformative impact of Self-Advocacy. Attendees reflected on how Self-Advocacy has begun to drive positive changes in independence, social inclusion, health and well-being. The Self- Advocacy Strategy not only identifies barriers but also sets a clear direction for empowering adults with disabilities.

Edel Quinn concluded that “this strategy, coupled with the HSE’s support, enables individuals to actively participate in decisions about the design, monitoring, and delivery of their support services. Our goal is for every person to reach their full potential and contribute to all aspects of life. We strive to create inclusive communities that embrace participation without labels, valuing the unique strengths and gifts each individual brings.”
