The HSE's Communications Division is an internal Communications Agency for the Health Services, leading a wide range of initiatives and providing consultancy to staff across our health services. We create communications programmes that aim to support a healthier nation and to build health services that are valued by everyone in Ireland.

We work with HSE division teams to deliver over 500 Communications projects annually. Our Services are provided through three teams:

  • Social marketing and behaviour change campaigns, public information and advertising
  • Brand development; market research and customer insights for over 12 health campaigns e.g QUIT, #Littlethings, Johnny's Got You Covered
  • Website development for, HSEnet and a range of other websites
  • Social media strategy and management
  • Video and audio content development
  • Crisis communications & emergency planning
  • Internal/staff communications; publications, reports and health literacy
  • Health Matters Staff Magazine - content production, publishing and distribution
  • Professional management of third party agency frameworks for creative advertising, media buying and digital support services


The Current Operations Team

The Current Operations team provides frontline media management and engagement and responds to media queries. In 2014, the team responded to over 5,000 media queries. The team also coordinates the out-of-hours media service which is provided seven days per week. The team offers proactive and reactive media advice to senior management and staff across the HSE. They provide a media monitoring and evaluation service and assist in preparing responses to media queries. The support offered by the team includes preparing press statements, providing PR and event management, identifying suitable spokespeople, and providing media training for them.

The HSE National Press Office deals with queries from the media in relation to the national health services. 
We are open from 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Out-of-Hours Media Service

The HSE National Press Office is open from 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.
Outside of these office hours,the HSE provides an emergency on-call media service for urgent queries only:

  • For out-of-hours media queries relating to serious incidents or major emergencies, please phone 087 227 4605.
  • Please note this out-of-hours phone number cannot accept queries by text message/SMS.
  • For out-of-hours media queries for Hospital Groups, please see the list of contacts below.
  • Non urgent queries or queries that require data gathering from across the health system cannot be facilitated outside of normal working hours. These queries should be directed to the relevant communications staff during normal working hours.

The Digital Team

The Digital Team is responsible for developing and implementing the digital communications strategy for the Health Services, in order to enhance existing and develop new digital and social media assets. hosted over 10 million visitors in 2015, and the team also manages 10 Twitter accounts and 10 Facebook pages for various health services. There are over 13,000 followers on the @HSELive Twitter account where the team engages directly with the public and provides information and answer questions on health services.

Our Facebook pages have over 260,000 people engaging; probably the most successful of these to date is the QUIT facebook page which has over 100,000 people talking to each other about their quitting experience and supporting each other. The digital team produces many videos in-house on news and updates from around the health services. We also have our own YouTube channel which has had over a quarter of a million views in 2015 alone.

The Digital team also encompasses the National Information Line a single lo-call number for health and social services information (Callsave 1850 24 1850). Operating from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, the service has received over one million calls to date.

Programmes and Campaigns Team

The Programmes and Campaigns team lead on all social marketing and behaviour change campaigns, and provide project management support and strategic communications services on a wide range of longer-term projects. The team's focus is on consumer insights to help people living in Ireland to improve their health and wellbeing, or to make HSE services easier to use and access. The team has developed award-winning campaigns on a wide range of topics and service areas; the QUIT campaign supports people to quit smoking; #LittleThings supports positive mental health; THINK contraception promotes good sexual health and Under the supports self-care at home and aims to curb the overuse of antibiotics, and the recent introduction of GP care without fees for children aged under 6.
