Public Health Nursing in Mayo

The Public Health Nursing Service includes Public Health Nurses (PHNs), Registered General Nurses, Liaison PHN, School Health Nurse, PHN for Travellers Health, PHN for Asylum Seekers and Refugees, Palliative Care Nurses and Liaison Paediatric Nurse. PHNs provide a wide range of services to all care groups. These include maternal-child health, clinical nursing, care of the terminally ill, school health screening and elderly assessment screening. They refer clients for other services such as home help, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and chiropidy to name just a few. They also provide antenatal classes, breast feeding support, health promotion and education as well as immunisation programmes in schools. Referrals are accepted from acute hospitals, clients themselves, as well as family members or carers.

 

Public Health Nurses operate from a local Health Centre . They are available in their local Health Centres from 9.30 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. to take telephone calls, meet with clients and take referrals from other disciplines.
